The origin of the name is obscured, but the tale most often told by the old timers was that it was named for an Indian Trader named Cook. The majority of the first settlers in Lafayette County originated from Alabama, Georgia, and the Carolinas. The Alabama settlers included such families as the Brantley's, Henken's, Henderson's, and Churches. These families brought their slaves with them and settled near Cooks Hammock where they eventually developed large sugar cane and cotton plantations.
